Internship Information
Starting in Summer 2025, EMA students (BAAS and BA/BS) may earn up to 6 credits for internships (up to 3 credits can apply to the EMA electives requirement).
3 Credits = 120 Hours
6 Credits = 240 Hours
To earn internship credits, a student must work on a project or perform duties unrelated to their standard day-to-day position. While interns can certainly be paid, we cannot award credits for doing your normal job (BAAS credits already allow you to receive credit for professional development and training related to your current position).
Per requirements, at least some of the internship hours must take place during the semester credits are awarded. Students cannot receive credit for a past internship experience.
Requirements
- Initial letter from a supervisor, human resources, etc. stating the duties, functions, or responsibilities of the internship,
- Statement from the student explaining how the internship differs from normal job functions,
- Submit materials and receive approval from Internship Coordinator = Moeller,
- Enrollment in POSC 4096*03 (3 Credits) or 4096*06 (6 Credits),
- Completion of hours and a verification letter or e-mail from a direct supervisor, and
- A 2-page paper explaining what was learned and how it relates to Emergency Management.
[Note 1] Internship credits require course enrollment. While POSC 4096 will be covered by the Texas Firefighter Tuition Waiver, normal student fees will still apply.
[Note 2] In unusual circumstances, additional verification, documentation, or academic work may be required.
