Professional Profile
Dr. Farmer joined the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice at WTAMU as an Instructor in Fall 2024. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Texas Permian Basin, graduating with a 4.0 GPA in 1991. He earned a master’s degree in political science from Texas Tech University in 1992 and a PhD in political science from Texas Tech University in 1996. He also completed 24 graduate hours of geography with a 4.0 GPA from Texas Tech University in 2001 after earning his PhD.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Farmer teaches American State and Local Government 2306 and American Government 2305 at WTAMU. Since beginning his teaching career at Texas Tech University in 1991, he has taught political science, history, and geography at six colleges and universities. He has earned numerous teaching awards including Professor of the Month from the Student Government Association at Lubbock Christian University in March 1996, the Student Government Association Professor of the Year award in 2004 at Amarillo College, the John F. Mead Faculty Excellence award from Amarillo College in 2009 and was recognized as an Outstanding State Employee by the Texas Legislature in 2009.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Farmer has authored ten college textbooks plus two articles published in a best-selling Texas Government book. He also received an award for “Best Paper from a Graduate Student” at the Rocky Mountain Conference on Latin American Studies in 1994. Dr. Farmer is also a musician and songwriter and played music and sang in restaurants, nightclubs, festivals, private parties, and weddings on and off for 46 years. Dr. Farmer also competed in athletics in junior high and high school and played football, baseball, and ran track. He also won the Scottsbluff NE table tennis championship in 1977 and the Nebraska Western College table tennis championship the same year.
