Music Theory Academy Policy and Information

GENERAL ITEMS

Theory Class: In-person classes will be taught in Northen 225.
Missed classes, sometime unavoidable, cannot be made up. Course materials will be given in class and an online resource for optional printing work at home will be distributed.
The Texas A&M System requires all who are involved in youth activities on campus provide Agreement for waiver, indemnification, assumption of risk and medical treatment authorization. Please return the form and any other required forms in a timely manner when asked.
Parking: Students of the Academy do not receive special parking privileges or free parking passes. Please contact the Parking Services Division at 806-651-2309 to obtain a visitor permit or to purchase the regular permit. There are also a few limited visitor parking spots in purple, please click here to view them. (Click on Visitor Parking Zone 12 MMNH)
Class instructors: All WT Music Theory Academy lessons are taught by current music students and sometimes attended by the music theory professor.
Commitment to Work: For proper musical growth, one must complete assignments given in the class throughout the week with the given resources. It is recommended that the parent help set a practice time for the theory exercises in the child’s daily routine.
Lesson termination: Mid-semester withdrawal is discouraged; in the event that this is unavoidable, there may not be a refund for the unused portion of the tuition. Students may be dismissed from the Music Academy at the end of the semester for delinquent payment, frequently-missed lessons, and/or lack of preparation for lessons.

CALENDAR AND TUITION PAYMENT

Spring classes will begin Saturday, January 21 at 10am for EVERYBODY. After a short diagnostic, students will be sorted into BASIC MUSIC THEORY or INTERMEDIATE MUSIC THEORY.
The semester continues through the first week of May at the latest with Saturdays 10-10:30am for basic music theory and Saturdays 10:45-11:15am for intermediate music theory.
A total of twelve classes will be taught during this time. Missed classes cannot be made up.
Following is the fee schedule:

Spring Semester 30-min Courses $100 (non refundable). Due on the first week of class, Saturday, January 21.

ATTENDANCE

Students should arrive five minutes prior to the appointment with all required work and supplies. The class will end on time, even if the student arrives late to the class.
Since this is a class setting, classes will occur upon the set schedule. The dates selected for the spring semester are made with reference to the CISD and AISD calendars and the busiest weekends have been noted. Upon the first meeting the final schedule of the 12 classes will be set and communicated. Missed classes, sometime unavoidable, cannot be made up. Course materials will be given in class and an online resource for optional printing work at home will be distributed.
It is highly recommend that the student sticks through the semester. Sometimes learning can be a slow process, but music theory can be highly rewarding. If a student stops showing for classes, no refunds will be given.

PARENTS’ ROLE AND SUCCEEDING IN MUSIC THEORY

Parental involvement: Young beginners generally require active parent involvement. Ages 5 to 9 (and beyond) will need a parent to be a committed partner in learning. It will not be necessary to sit in on the theory class. Because the musical progress of the child lies mostly in how successful and regular home practice is, your involvement is crucial. It is not necessary that you teach the child; in fact it is often counter-productive. Simply help your child follow the instructions given to them by the teacher (instruction will be given in class and on the homework). The amount of involvement required in homework varies by child.
Quiet work room: it is very important that the student works in an area that is quiet.
If your child is older and experienced, your job at home is a less active one. Even still, continue to validate the child’s musical effort by asking him or her to show you their work. Attention to penmanship and neatness is important to musical communication. Regularly ask questions and have a conversation about the classes. Provide a musically nurturing environment at home, which can be done in a number of ways.
