Music Therapy

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of individuals.

At WT students take courses in music, psychology, statistics, and behavioral sciences (among others). Specific Therapy courses include psychological foundation of music, the influence of music on behavior, experimental research in music, introductory musical acoustics, abnormal psychology, piano, guitar, percussion, and music ensembles.

In addition to on-campus coursework, music therapy students gain experience by conducting music therapy sessions in the community via practicum experiences. Finally, our students complete an internship with experienced music therapy supervisors.

Students graduating from the music therapy program at WTAMU will go on to work in many different settings, such as: hospitals, mental health clinics, retirement facilities, school systems, government agencies, or even open their own private practice.
