Music Composition

The studio is dedicated to developing the technical skills requisite for artistic self-expression in the art of composition. The years of study in composition will help students develop a unique voice through the careful study and application of varied compositional techniques and styles. Careful study of specific post-tonal composers and works will be incorporated in the lessons and seminars. A typical composition student at WT will strive to create works that acknowledge their place in the 21st century and serve to consciously add to the musical milieu.

Music composition majors at WTAMU will study one on one with Dr. BJ Brooks during their degree and also participate in composition studio time with their peers to collaborate and grow as a studio. Composition majors will also have opportunities to have their works performed on campus, as well as present a composition recital at the end of their coursework.

Please note that admission into the composition studio is dependent on coursework in the first part of your undergraduate degree. The requirements are as follows:

·Only students who have passed freshmen Theory I & II with an A will be reviewed for admittance.

·Submit a portfolio consisting of 3-5 representative works (scores and recordings).

·Portfolios will be reviewed beginning in January for admittance into the studio the following fall.
