Texas Success Initiative Exemptions
A student may be exempt from meeting Texas Success Initiative standards by meeting one of the following standards.
ACT | Composite score of 23 or higher with at least a 19 on both English and Math sections. Scores must be no older than 5 years. |
SAT |
Minimum score of 530 on the mathematics test is exempt for the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment. Minimum score of 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) test is exempt for both reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment. There is no combined score. |
TAKS | Minimum score of 2200 on both the English and/or math sections with at least a 3 on the writing component of Grade 11 TAKS (for period of 5 years from the date of testing). |
STAAR End-of-Course | Minimum score of Level 2 (4000) on the English III and minimum score of Level II (4000) of the Algebra II. Scores must be no older than 5 years. |
Military | Veterans who have been honorably discharged or active duty personnel who has been serving for at least 3 years preceding enrollment. |
Transfer | Transfer form a private or independent institution or an accredited out-of-state institution and has satisfactory completed college-level-coursework as determined by the receiving institution. |
Texas College Bridge |
WTAMU is partnered with the Texas College Bridge preparatory course program. Students must submit their certificate of completion for Math and/or English in order for TSI exemption to be applied. More information at http://texascollegebridge.org/. **Other college preparatory course program certificates are NOT accepted at this time. |

Math Placement Exemptions
Math Placement will be determined by the TSI Assessment. Placement into higher level MATH courses will be determined by early college credit (see chart below) and/or entrance exams.

- Transfer students who successfully complete a developmental math course within two years of enrollment, equivalent to MATH 0303, at a Texas public or private post-secondary institution will be placed in the appropriate credit-bearing math course.
Waivers for PUP, Transient, and Active Military Students
- Pre-University Program Students (PUP)
Students dual enrolling prior to completing Grade 11 STAAR Exam or ACT/SAT may be waived on equivalent End of Course scores for Grade 10, or by meeting minimum TSI standards.
PSAT scores meeting the minimum requirements set by the THECB for TSI waivers can be submitted by high school students enrolling in PUP courses. The requirements are: PSAT EBRW of 460 or more for reading and writing TSI waiver, PSAT Math 510 or more for math TSI waiver. PSAT scores CANNOT be used for TSI Exemption for students enrolling in college level coursework after graduation from high school. - Transient and Non-Degree Seeking Students
Students enrolled at WTAMU to fulfill a course outside of their home institution may be waived semester by semester depending on the course. Waivers are not for prerequisites, only TSI requirements. - Active Military
Students currently on active duty in military, reserves or Texas National Guard will be waived until honorably discharged.
TSI requirements must be satisfied by an exemption or assessment for the appropriate TSI area for a student to be eligible to enroll in courses in the following subject areas. | |
