Leave Programs
Vacation
If eligible, you will accrue vacation time each month you work for the University. You may not take vacation until you have been continuously employed by the state for six months, although you will accrue vacation time during that period. Accrual rates and the maximum number of hours that can be carried over to the next fiscal year are based on years of service. The following table shows accrual rates and the maximum carry over for full-time employees. If you are an eligible part-time employee, your amounts are proportionate to your percent effort.
Total State Service | Monthly Vacation Accrual | Carryover to Next Fiscal Year |
Less than 2 years | 8 hours | 180 hours |
2 years but less than 5 | 9 hours | 244 hours |
5 years but less than 10 | 10 hours | 268 hours |
10 years but less than 15 | 11 hours | 292 hours |
15 years but less than 20 | 13 hours | 340 hours |
20 years but less than 25 | 15 hours | 388 hours |
25 years but less than 30 | 17 hours | 436 hours |
30 years but less than 35 | 19 hours | 484 hours |
35 years or more | 21 hours | 532 hours |
Sick Leave
If eligible, you will earn eight hours of sick leave per month or a proportionate amount if you are working less than full-time. Sick leave may be accumulated without limit and there is no waiting period before sick leave may be taken.
Sick leave may be used when sickness, injury, or pregnancy and confinement prevent you from performing you duties, when you are needed to care for and assist a member of your immediate family who is ill, or when you must visit a doctor or accompany an immediate family member on a doctor visit. Immediate family is defined as those individuals living in the same household and related by kinship, adoption or marriage, or foster children certified by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services. Your minor children are considered immediate family even if they do not reside in your home. You may also use sick leave to provide care and assistance to a child, spouse or parent with a documented medical condition who does not reside in your home. Finally, you may use up to eight hours each calendar year to attend parent-teacher conferences for dependent children in pre-kindergarten through grade 12, provided reasonable, advance notice is given.
Direct donations of accrued sick leave can now be given directly to a recipient by completing the following: Donor Form and Recipient Form.
Family Medical Leave
You may take up to 12 weeks of family or medical leave each fiscal year for:
- the birth of a child
- the placement of a child with you for adoption or for state-certified foster care
- the care of a child, spouse or parent with a serious health condition
- a serious personal health condition that prevents you from performing the essential functions of your job
You are eligible for family medical leave if you have at least one year of service with the state and have worked at least 1,250 hours for the state in the 12 months preceding the beginning of the leave. The Employee's Guide to the Family and Medical Leave Act
