Professional Profile
Dr. Byers joined the Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences at WTAMU in 2015. She received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Texas - El Paso, and also her Ph.D. in Molecular Cell Biology from the University of Texas - El Paso in 2004.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Byers teaches Basic and Contemporary Biology and upper division Cell Biology at WTAMU. Dr. Byers has previously taught Cancer Biology, Bioethics, Neurobiology and Vertebrate Physiology, and is the author of "Cell Biology in the Lab", used to teach inquiry-based lab sections for her course.
Dr. Byers is an advisor to Pre-Med and Pre-Dental students in Biology at WTAMU.
She is a member of the American Society for Cell Biology, Society for Neuroscience, American Neurochemistry Society, Molecular and Cellular Cognition Society and AAAS.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Byers’ research interests include early development of the cholinergic system in the brain, genetic markers of gender-specific stress effects on learning and memory, and molecular mechanisms of nutraceuticals used as primary and co-therapeutics in the treatment of cancer and other diseases.
