Professional Profile
Dr. Bouma joined the Department of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences in August, 2005. She received her bachelor's degree in biology, with a minor in chemistry, from McDaniel College. She earned a Ph.D. from the Department of Biology at the Johns Hopkins University.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Bouma teaches microbiology, histology, medical microbiology and microbial genetics. She is the faculty adviser for the Pre-Medicine Program and the WTAMU Pre-Healthcare Club. She is also the JAMP faculty director at WTAMU. She is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, the ASM Texas Branch, and is a member and Past President of the Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Bouma uses techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics to study carbohydrate transport, and its regulation, in bacteria. She also collaborates with Dr. Emily Hunt’s research group to characterize the antimicrobial properties of their patented silver nanofoam.
