  • Glacier Tax Prep (GTP) will be available for the 2024 Tax return process mid Feburary or later for the 2024 tax return season. • Glicier Tax Prep (GTP) is NOT the same as GLACIER
  • if you are currently employed by WT or were employed at anytime in 2023 by WT, you have a GLACIER profile.  GLACIER is the system used at WT for payroll and tax purposes
  • To access GTP, enter your exsisting GLACIER profile
  • ALL nonresident aliens who are required to file a U.S. federal tax return will use tax Form 1040-NR
  • If you did not work for WT in 2023, you most likely do not have a GLACIER profile
  • Students who do not have a GLACIER profile can request a GTP access code from the Buff $mart Office

Do I need to file a tax return?

Each year, foreign students living and working in the U.S. must submit a tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, only currently enrolled students who were present in the U.S. during the 2023 tax year (January 1, 2023 thru Dec. 31, 2023) need to file a tax return.  Students who recently entered the U.S. in the year 2024, do not need to file a tax return until next year (2025).

Some students may receive other tax forms from their bank with information concerning interest earned on bank accounts.  In most cases, these will not be used in filing your tax return.  Most of the time, these statements are for notification purposes only.

What should I do?

In the weeks prior to filing a tax return, students might receive different types of forms (1098T, W-2, 1042S) from their employer and/or the university.  Not all students will receive the same types of  tax forms.  The forms issued to file a tax return depend on your personal tax situation.  These forms will contain information on the amount of income earned, taxes paid on income earned, and taxable amounts on some or part of your scholarship awards.  For example, if the entire amount of your scholarship award was applied towards  your tuition and fees billing statement, most likely you will not owe any taxes on your scholarship.  However, if you also received scholarship awards to help pay for room and board, books and other non-tuition related cost, most likely you will be issued a 1042S form by the university business office.  The 1042S form will show the taxible amount of the award and can be accesssed by loging into your GLACIER.  The first step in filing a tax return is to learn about the different types of  forms you might receive for use in filing your tax return.   Please see the list of typical forms

What is the difference between GLACIER and GLACIER TAX PREP?

GLACIER vs GLACIER TAX PREP - Please be aware that when we reference GLACIER on this website, we are speaking of the university purchased software system that payroll or the business office use to track income earned by international students. GLACIER TAX PREP (GTP) is the software used by the Buff $mart office to assist students in the preparation of their tax return.  Students who have a GLACIER profile will be able to access the (GTP) software to prepare their tax return by entering the GLACIER site.   Students who have never been employed by the university will not have a GLACIER profile and will need to request an access code to enter (GTP)to prepare their tax return.

Please Note: Because foreign students have different tax situations, the Buff $mart office has purchased tax software called Glacier Tax Prep (GTP) for students to use in preparation of a tax return. This software will ask a few questions and at the end of the process, a 1040-NR tax form will be generated.  You will be provided with instructions on what forms to include with your tax return and where to mail all of these forms.  Please have the following documents ready to enter information into the GTP system (passport, visa, I-20, I-94, banking information, W-2 Form and 1042S).

It is important for each student to identify their tax situation before accessing the software.

What is your tax situation?

  1. No U.S. Income AND no taxable scholarships in (2023)?

You MUST file a form 8843.  You can find this form at the Internal Revenue Sevice website at www.irs.gov

  2. Athletes with Scholarships

Athletes who have received scholarships which include room & board, books & supplies, medical health insurance or other benefits beyond tuition but who do not already have a social security card, will need to contact Mr. Don Adams in the WTAMU Business Office at dpadams@wtamu.edu.  Mr. Adams will assist athletes with completing the forms necessary to receive an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).  An ITIN will be needed before these students can file a tax return.  Once you receive your ITIN number, you can enter your GLACIER profile and file a tax return.

  3. Income from University?

To file a tax return please log into your exsisting GLACIER  profile.  You should be able to enter the site with your GLACIER ID and password. If you have forgotten your ID and password, you may request it at this site. Please be aware that you must use the same email address you used when you first created your GLACIER profile for the payroll office.

  4. No income from University but income from ARAMARK, SSC or internship employer?

If you only worked for ARAMARK, SSC, or in an off campus internship situation in 2023, most likely you do not have a password into the GLACIER system. Students who only worked for ARAMARK, SSC, or for an off campus internship employer in 2023 can use Glacier Tax Prep software to do their taxes. However, you must request an access code from the Buff $mart office to access the Glacier Tax Prep system.

Do Not pay the fee requested to get an access code at this site. Get a free access code from ISS.

  5. Income from University and ARAMARK or University and SSC?

If you worked for the university and ARAMARK in 2023 or the university and SSC, you may access GLACIER to file your tax return.  You should be able to enter the site with your GLACIER ID and password. If you have forgotten your ID and password, you may request it at this site. Please be aware that you must use the same email address you used when you first created your GLACIER profile for the payroll office.

  6. Students in Post Optional Practical Training Status?

Students in OPT who worked for the university in 2023 can most likely still access GLACIER . If you have forgotten your password, you may request it at this site. Please be aware that you must use the same email address you used when you first created your GLACIER profile for the payroll office.

  7. Student in the U.S. for 5 years+?

If you have been a student in the U.S. for 5 calendar years or more, you may not be able to use  GLACIER Tax Prep to prepare your tax return. GLACIER Tax Prep can only be used by students who are considered non-residents for tax purposes. Once a student has lived in the U.S. for 5 or more years, they may no longer be considered a non-resident for tax purposes. Being classified as a non-resident for tax purposes is unrelated to your visa status. Students classified as non-residents for tax purposes should complete a tax return that fits their tax needs. Please visit the IRS website at www.irs.gov for information.
