Arrival Information

Notify the International Student Office of your travel plans using the Arrival Notification Form or email Kristine Combs at kcombs@wtamu.edu. Please be aware office operations are from 8 am to 5 pm Monday thru Friday (Central Standard Time) and we are closed on Saturday and Sunday.  Airport pick-up services outside operational hours are not likely. 

  • ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS

    • Book your flight for your final destination in Amarillo Texas,­ Rick Husband International Airport (Airport Code: AMA).
    • If you would like to be picked up at the airport during office hours, please notify the office 5 days prior to your flight using the Arrival Notification Form.
      • Please include arrival plans in the additional information section (ex. staying the night at a hotel).
    • If you prefer to take a taxi from the airport to West Texas A&M University, please be aware the campus is approximately 25 miles from the airport.  The taxi cost is approximately $60 USD. We ask that you provide arrival information using the arrival information form above even if you hire a taxi or use some other method of transportation  (coach, friend, family) to notify us of your arrival.  Please include arrival date, time, airline and flight numbers for departure, connections and arrival.
    • Housing
      • On-Campus -Residence Halls officially open on Thursday Aug. 17th at 9am; Dining Hall opens at 11 am
        Arrangements may be made for international students to check in a few days early (with Director approval). You must have a room assignment and you must provide us with your arrival information to secure an early check-in. Checking in early may incur additional charges. Please be prepared to stay in a local Canyon hotel if we are unable to secure early check-in for the date of your early arrival.
        • IMPORTANT: WTAMU's housing requirement applies to new, transfer, relocating, and re-enrolling students. Students who fail to comply with the housing requirement may have their registration denied or canceled, a hold placed on their student account, and housing charges posted to their account.
      • Off-Campus -If you will not be living in the WTAMU residence halls, you may want to consider living in an apartment in Canyon.  Please contact us for a copy of a local apartment list. Please note: International Student Services does not endorse any apartment complexes or companies. The apartment list is compiled of general public information that can be found on the internet. 
    • Hotels (temporary housing) -You will need to secure temporary housing (if needed) while you wait to move into your residence hall, apartment, house, etc. Canyon has several hotels you can choose from. Please contact the hotel directly for more information about rates and availability. An internet search for hotels in Canyon, Tx will return a list of available hotels.  The International Student Services office does not endorse any specific hotels. However, the Buffalo Inn hotel is the nearest hotel to campus and is located directly across the street from campus. 

Transportation to WTAMU

When making plans, schedule your arrival at the Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport to coincide with our office hours. If you arrive between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. (central standard time), Monday through Friday, the International Student Office staff will pick you up at the airport.

If your flight is delayed, contact the office as soon as possible at 806-651-2073. After office hours or in case of emergency, contact the university police department at 806-651-2300 giving your full name, student ID#, country, airline, the change in plans, and a number where you can be reached, if possible. The university police will communicate your message to director Kristine Combs.  You may also send an email to kcombs@wtamu.edu

If you arrive after 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or on a weekend, we will make every possible effort to schedule your pick-up, but if we are unable to do so, you'll need to arrange for taxi transportation to Canyon and stay in a Canyon hotel until the office is open.
