Virtual Career EXPO – FAQs

As the times are changing and adapting to include both virtual and in-person events, it's important to be prepared for any kind of career fair. Handshake has numerous fairs available for you to attend virtually, so be sure to explore the opportunities out there. This may be new territory for you, so check out the section below to find some answers to your questions

1. What is the difference between a group and a 1-on-1 session?

Group sessions is where employers will share more about their organizations with students. There is typically a Q&A portion. A one-on-one session is 10 minutes long, and is an opportunity to discuss your background, experience, as well as current job and internship opportunities.

2. Do I need to sign up for sessions before the virtual career fair starts?

Yes! You should register for sessions after you register for the fair, this secures your spot with the employers you want to meet.

3. I don’t see any available sessions with the employers I’m interested in. What should I do?

If you don’t see available sessions, it may mean that the employer is in the process of setting up their sessions, or their sessions are full. Make sure to have an open mind when deciding which employers to meet during virtual career fairs.

4. Do I need to be on video?

Having your video on is optional, however it is HIGHLY recommended that you turn it on especially for one-on-one sessions. In group sessions video will not be enabled unless you are asking a question. Use the “raise your hand” feature to ask a question.

5. What should I wear if I am on video?

You definitely want to dress to impress for the virtual career fair. This can help boost your confidence! Employers are still interested in seeing that you put in an effort even in a virtual setting.

6. How do I share my resume with employers?

The easiest way to do this, is to upload it to your Handshake profile and make it visible. If your resume is already in Handshake make sure to mark it as visible.

7. I don’t want to be late. How soon can I join a session?

You can join a session 5 minutes in advance.

8. What types of questions should I ask during a session?

Virtual sessions are opportunities to learn more about employers and decide which are a good fit for you. What do you want to learn more about? Company Culture? Career growth?

9. How should I introduce myself during a 1-on-1 session

Prepare a brief introduction about yourself including your background, studies, and career goals. Check out our Tuesday Tip on Elevator Pitches for tips on how to prepare your introduction.

10. Can I drop out of group sessions early or should I wait for them to end?

You will want to stay for the entire session if you wish to make a good impression with employers. You wouldn’t leave a one-on-one session early so don’t disappear from a group sessions either. Staying until the end demonstrates that you are responsible and respectful of their time.
