One of the biggest excuses we tend to make about looking for a job is “I don’t have that kind of time.” However, with the holidays approaching you most likely have some time off from work and school. Use this time wisely to touch base with your network even if you aren’t looking for a job at this moment. Even a simple email to people in your industry or that you know professionally updating them on your career status and wishing them happy holidays can go a long way. If people in your chosen career are active on LinkedIn, make it a point to log on a few times a week to connect with others and remember to like, comment, or share posts.
When applying for jobs you will often be asked for references or letters of recommendation and keeping these relationships active can help ensure that you have people on your side. This can also help you find the next opportunity to gain some valuable experience and skills before going into your career. Remember the old saying "it's not about what you know. It's about who you know" and maintaining relationships with your network could serve you well in the future.
