There is often confusion about the difference between a curriculum vitae (CV) and a resume. Both are used in a job search and give an employer some insight into our work. So what’s the difference? In short, CVs are longer and are credential based, used most often in academic, medical, and research settings while resumes are typically competency based used for other kinds of opportunities.
Both documents begin with personal contact information and include credentials such as education, experience, and accolades. CVs also contain more detailed information around teaching and research experience as well as publications, professional presentations, and grants/fellowships. Resumes should be targeted to each particular position you seek with relevant work experience, a profile or summary detailing your relevant skills, and perhaps information about your campus or community involvement.
WT’s Office of Career and Professional Development can assist you with both types of job search documents. We offer resume workshops as well as 1:1 resume review appointments to help you develop your best possible resume. For a CV, we highly recommend looking at CVs of others in your field to determine what types of information to include. Once you’ve done that research, we are happy to meet with you 1:1 to review it for consistency, format, spelling, and presentation.
