During the holiday season it may be a time of hustle and bustle. That can be wonderful, but it can also take away from our reflection time. Let’s talk about how you need to be intentional to reflect upon your learning. This can be learning in the classroom, or learning on the job or otherwise.
Reflect on what skills you have gained. Maybe in your last semester you took a class on event planning and did a project where you helped plan an event. That project would be a great addition to your resume. If you didn’t do a whole project, maybe you were more intentional with your time management this semester so you can add that to your skills section. Try to think outside of the box to really make sure you don’t miss a skill you have gained.
Reflect on what you want to change in your professional development. Professional development is something that’s easy to push off until later, right? I will start applying for jobs when I graduate, or I will refresh my resume next semester. It’s one of those things where there’s rarely a “right” or convenient time. Take baby steps and go to one event hosted by the career office or meet with one person in the industry you wish to go into for a career conversation. Check out events here. Ask a mentor or supervisor what tip they wish they had taken in their career and professional development, and see if you need to take that tip.
Remember, it’s never too late to start changing your trajectory. Figuring out where you’ve been can help you move forward. Reflection should help you take positive steps towards your goals. If you want to meet with a career coach, schedule an appointment in Handshake.
