This may be a topic you feel like you can push off until later, but really, now is a great time to start because you have so many professional development opportunities at your fingertips as a student. Although your time is scant, spend a little bit of that TikTok scrolling time on bettering yourself, and it will pay off for you in the future!
The first is your Career and Professional Development office. Throughout the semester there are workshops offered to help you develop your professional skills, from interviewing to critical thinking, these workshops will push you to be better. Not on campus, or maybe you just want to stay cozy in your jammies, you can watch a plethora of YouTube videos on our channel. My personal favorite is the Interviewing Insights. You can also meet with someone one on one if you have more specific questions.
Handshake has lots of professional development articles and even virtual events hosted by employers so when you get those handshake emails don’t unsubscribe! Instead, join in and start learning and connecting with employers now.
The second is checking out other offerings on campus. Check out the Student Event Calendar and see what’s out there for you! Be brave and go alone or drag your friend along, but either way you should take advantage of the cool things happening on campus/online. Don’t forget to add the people you connect with on LinkedIn.
Thirdly, use LinkedIn. This may mean you need to create a LinkedIn, which is a great idea by the way. LinkedIn can help you keep track of your work history and all the amazing connections you make during your college career. Another feature on LinkedIn is the free learning! Visit opportunity.linkedin.com to find free training for skills that are in demand. This would be great learning to add to your resume. Want to know more about how to use and create a LinkedIn? Watch our YouTube video.
There are many more opportunities to learn and grow professionally, so keep your eyes peeled. We encourage you to connect with our office and make an appointment. It is our mission to help you grow and learn and also add it to your resume to better market yourself. Please call 806-651-2345 or email wtcareer@wtamu.edu with questions on how to connect.
