Pitfalls in the Job Search
In many job search appointments with students and recent grads, we ask a few main questions to get to the root of why they aren’t getting called:
- Are you tailoring your resume and cover letter? Tailoring/targeting means that you highlight accomplishments and skills that align with the role description. This takes more time but in the end you will get more interviews.
- Have you actually applied? I know it sounds silly, but sometimes the fear of rejection leaves people stuck and afraid to actually start applying. Side note: you don’t need 100% of qualifications to apply for a position.
The last tip is not so much a pitfall, but a word of advice: Read carefully when applying and be sure to follow all necessary steps so that a small error doesn’t knock you out of the running.
