Your part-time job may seem insignificant, or even just a necessary evil, but did you know you can truly capitalize on your part time work experience? Here are a few ways that your part-time work can make an impact, and how you can make an impact.
Focus on doing the small things right. When you show diligence, attention to detail, and follow through in the small tasks that grows your supervisor’s confidence in your abilities. This could lead to bigger responsibilities. Those weightier responsibilities reflect the fact that you can be trusted with more or even promoted.
Build a strong reference. Every day you show up with a good attitude, professionalism, and on time you are showing the employer that you are a hard worker. That will go a long way because that employer can speak to your work ethic in your next workplace. The idea that you will start working hard when you get your full-time job is just not true. You are what you do, so start now!
Don’t just go with the flow. The reputation of many part-time workers is that they just aren’t as invested in the work. If you are the person who is and who goes above and beyond you will be noticed. Set an example for others. Mentor new workers and be a leader in a role where it is unexpected.
Gain and look for skills! Don’t just show up and do the minimum, as has already been mentioned. Ask for more opportunities to learn. Ask your supervisor questions. If you see a need that you know about try to fill that gap. Then you will have the chance to add that to your resume under your experience in that role.
