We all know what it feels like to walk into a room and glance down at your outfit just to realize you’re either the under or overdressed person in the crowd. Well, we want to help you avoid falling into either of these categories when heading to an interview!
So where do you start? Begin with some research to see if you can determine the company’s culture. This can be one avenue to gaining insight on expectations regarding your interview attire. You may even be able to look across similar companies to determine if there is an industry standard. Some industries such as finance, banking, law, etc. are traditionally more formal and so formal business attire is going to be the most appropriate option. It’s hard to go wrong with a classic black or navy suit in this instance!
Is the business a little more casual? Before you grab your favorite pair of ripped jeans and flannel top, try going for a business casual look. Business casual is a safe bet in most instances, however, make sure you do your research before assuming anything. Even if the interviewer is fresh from behind the coffee bar wearing an apron with stains, your best bet is to go a couple of steps up from your normal everyday wear.
Some things you should avoid when planning your interview outfit: flip flops, low-cut tops, crop tops, athletic wear, tennis shoes, tank tops, bright colors, PJ pants, etc. We also suggest limiting your use of cologne/perfume or over-accessorizing.
