Imposter Syndrome is defined as believing that you are not as competent as others perceive you to be. Another way to put it, is feeling like a fraud who only got their degree, skills, or even social status because of luck or an accident. Now, why does this matter to your professional development? It matters because people who feel this way are less likely to apply for jobs they don’t feel one hundred percent qualified for or apply for graduate school or a promotion or ask questions for fear of looking stupid.
The first step is realizing that you are not alone! In fact, many people suffer from this feeling, and especially people from marginalized groups. Knowing you are in the company of many highly achieving people is a good start.
Next, just go for it. Change that self-talk and tell yourself that you can apply for the job, promotion, etc. It may also help to look back at all the steps that got you to where you are now. Chances are you have many moments of hard work that brought you your accomplishments.
