Handshake: we talk about it a lot in the office of Career and Professional Development, but there are a few features of Handshake you may need to learn more about.
Handshake has a blog. This blog covers topics related to Handshake like skills to list on your profile, but also when to apply for a position, life after graduation, and much more. This is a great resource if you want to read more career related topics from a reputable source. These blog posts can be viewed even without logging in to a Handshake account.
Connect with the Career Center. The Career Center is what they call our office. When you click on “Career Center” in your handshake profile you can see different ways to connect with our office. You can make one-on-one appointments, access resources that the office has shared, and see upcoming events hosted by the office or employers who are connected to WT. Many times employers will visit campus and those events will be listed on Handshake. If the employer is looking for students in your major you will also probably receive an email from Handshake, so be sure to check your emails.
Search for jobs or internships. One of the more well known features of Handshake is the job search database. Like many other job search sites, you can filter your search based on location, type, and more. Handshake is also the only place that you will be able to find and apply for on-campus jobs. Simply click “on campus” to see the on campus roles. One reason Handshake is nice is because the people posting jobs in Handshake know that there will be either college students or recent grads that will be viewing and applying to their postings. Handshake also starts to learn what you’re searching for and will send targeted emails based on your search history. Updating your information in Handshake helps ensure the job/internship opportunities sent your way are relevant.
Check out employer events. Employers from many companies will host events that will be posted in Handshake. Many of these are virtual events where you can learn about jobs or internships that are posted or network with employers to learn how you might be a fit at a company.
Make sure you are utilizing Handshake and as always you can contact our office or stop by CC 113 if you need any help.
