I have discussed the importance of networking before, but today I am focusing on a specific audience of folks who serve as assets to your career. Faculty (also known as professors).
I know I may be preaching to the choir on this one, but I find that this can be a missed opportunity for many students. Connecting to people who have lived out your dream career or have worked in similar occupations is such a unique gift that college students have and yet many do not seize this opportunity. These connections can serve you well when it comes time to providing employers with a list of references. Yes! Faculty can be a great reference for you as you navigate the job market. They can speak to your work ethic, people skills, dedication, and more.
So, while you still have the chance, start finding ways to connect with your faculty. Attend office hours, come to class early to discuss a relevant topic or stay late so you can thank your professor. Prepare a thoughtful question for each class. Ask for career advice or suggestions on ways you can gain relevant skills to help you in your career. While our office is always happy to help students and alum with resume development, it is never a bad idea to ask your faculty for their insight as well. Your faculty provide unique industry insight that others might not be able to.
Lastly, the great benefit of networking with your faculty is that they know people who know people. Like any great network, your connections could be the golden ticket to finding your way into a job or internship! I once had a very direct and outspoken faculty member who said “if I never hear you talk in class and if we don’t have a connection, what makes you think I would want to be your reference?” This professor was talking about getting into PhD programs which is yet another reason to build rapport with faculty, however, this advice is still true for job references. Don’t wait around, start connecting today.
