Health Insurance and Medical Information

If you have a life-threatening illness or injury, please call 911 on your phone or go to the Emergency Room. These services are available 24 hours a day, every day, including holidays and weekends (24/7/365).

For non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries, schedule an appointment with Student Medical Services (SMS) on-campus, or with a local doctor. SMS and doctor's offices are generally open 8 or 9-5, Monday-Friday, and may be closed on holidays.

If you cannot get a same-day appointment and cannot wait, you can also go to Urgent Care. Urgent Care facilities do not require an appointment and can treat non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries. While most Urgent Care facilities are not open 24/7, they tend to be open early and close later than regular doctor's offices. Some are also open on the weekends.

IMPORTANT: Always have your health insurance card with you when you go to any of these places. Please see the Health Insurance section below for information on health insurance and why it is important to always have your card with you at all times.

WT has an on-campus Student Medical Services (SMS) office that can treat many illnesses and injuries. If you go to SMS and have your WT health insurance card, there is no charge to see a doctor, unless they perform tests or prescribe medication. We recommend visiting SMS if you get sick or injured.

There are many off-campus doctors as well. Cost of the doctor depends on the type of doctor (general vs. specialist), and if the doctor is covered by WT's health insurance.

Prescription medications in the US are controlled medications. This means that a doctor must approve your use of the medication before you are allowed to have access to it.

If you already have prescription medications that will need to filled during your stay in the US, please schedule an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible after your arrival into the US. This is to ensure that you do not run out of necessary medication(s) and can receive the proper medication.

Please be aware that your doctor in the US may wish to or need to verify any health conditions that you may have before they are able to fill or refill your prescription. As part of this process, they may perform tests or other procedures.

If you take non-prescription medications, please schedule an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible after your arrival into the US. Due to US laws, your medication may be controlled and therefore require a prescription in the US. We want to ensure that you have access to the medications that you need.

If at any time while in the US, you fall ill or are injured, your doctor may prescribe medications. These are sent to a pharmacy of your choice for you to pick up. Please see the List of Local Pharmacies below.

Over-the-Counter medications are medications that do not require a doctor's approval. They can be found in pharmacies, and in many grocery stores, department stores, gas stations, and many other locations.

Some over-the-counter medications may have an age requirement, where you cannot purchase the medication unless you are a certain age (most over-the-counter medications require the buyer to be 18 years old or older).
