How you pay, when you pay, and whether or not you can get a refund if plans change depends on the program you are participating in. In many cases, your initial deposit may be refundable; after certain date, you can probably be refunded 50%, more or less, depending on the program rules. It is very important that you think carefully about your program and make a serious decision before you make any payments, as there is a chance that you will lose money if you change your mind too late.
For faculty-led programs, the faculty member and their department will communicate with students the cost of the trip, payment deadlines, and travel arrangements. As these trips are typically at the end of a semester, students will pay for their tuition and fees as usual, with the study abroad trip as an additional expense. Faculty-led trips can be much more affordable than studying through a third-party provider, and are a great option for first-time international travelers or students who may not be comfortable traveling to a new country alone.
For exchange programs direct enrollment takes place with our partner institutions for terms of one semester to one year. Students who participate in this exchange pay their WT tuition as they would as if attending classes on campus, but study and live at the exchange university. By paying tuition for WT, students are able to utilize their student loans to pay for their semester, and can receive a refund for additional monies while abroad.
Third-party Affiliate Providers offer all-in-one packages for study abroad students. Costs associated with these programs include housing, tuition for the overseas university, food (sometimes), transportation from the airport, and some include excursions to iconic locations within that country. Students who choose these programs are responsible for all costs associated and payments to their provider. The Office of Study Abroad is not responsible for coordinating these payments. Financial aid is not available for these trips, but many providers offer their own discounts.
Students who choose to pursue international internship opportunities are able to coordinate with Third-party Affiliate Providers for these trips. Scholarships only apply if the student is receiving academic credit for the internship. Each program provider offeres virtual and in-person internships, so costs can be highly variable with this option.
Regardless of the program you choose (faculty-led, exchange, or through provider), you are required to complete and submit a set of forms for the Office of Study Abroad. If you fail to turn in all the required forms (including the post-program forms), a hold will be placed in your account and you will not be able to register for classes.
