WTAMU’s Enactus Team Competes at National Competition
CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s Enactus was named a finalist in opening round competition and ultimately placed first runner-up in its quarter final round league April 1-3 at the Enactus U.S.A. National Exposition in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the 20th consecutive year that the team has competed in national competition.
Enactus teams use the positive power of business and an entrepreneurial mindset to empower people in need by "seeing possibilities, taking action and enabling progress."
During the 2013-14 academic year, WTAMU Enactus projects focused on marketing and technology consulting for The Locals Go Here, a local business; tutoring refugees; mentoring teenagers at the Youth Center of the High Plains; tutoring GED students through No Limits No Excuses Amarillo; sponsoring the Moses Business Plan Competition for WTAMU students; teaching students at Canyon Intermediate about the growth of businesses from startup to Wall Street; and partnering with community organizations to promote entrepreneurship, college and career training and hunger relief.
Enactus team members sharpen their own leadership, teamwork and project management skills through using an entrepreneurial approach to enabling progress for others; then more than 50 national companies who specifically target Enactus students in their hiring process give team members seeking internships or employment the opportunity to be recruited at the Career Fair at the U.S.A. National Exposition.
WTAMU Enactus is a student organization of the College of Business, but membership is open to any major of any classification at WTAMU. In addition to the 518 American teams, Enactus teams on college campuses in 35 other countries compete nationally for the right to represent their country at Enactus World Cup in Beijing, China, in October 2014.
The speakers showcasing team projects for corporate judges included Greg Moreno, Thao Nguyen, Adriana Gallegos, Mary Dittfurth, Travis George, Mitch Thornton and Gloria Chavarria. The team was accompanied to Cincinnati by Jean Walker, Miller Professor of Entrepreneurship, and Dr. Leigh Browning, professor of marketing.
