WTAMU’s CIS Program Granted Accreditation
CANYON, Texas—The College of Business at West Texas A&M University is pleased to announce that its Bachelor of Business Administration degree program in computer information systems (CIS) has been granted accreditation for a full six years, the maximum length of time by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, the most prominent accreditation body responsible for accrediting engineering, computing, applied science and engineering technology degree programs.
The University’s CIS program is one of only 37 information systems programs accredited by CAC of ABET in the United States. There are only three such programs accredited in the state of Texas.
The College of Business announcement is particularly unique in that this accreditation is the only accredited CIS program in Texas at an AACSB-accredited business school.
"The accreditation is a culmination of years of careful program development according to international standards and an 18-month review process by ABET that took place during 2010 and 2012," Dr. Amjad Abdullat, associate dean, director of undergraduate programs and professor of CIS, said. "The accreditation is retroactive from Oct. 1, 2011 and continues until Sept. 30, 2019.
"This is a significant accomplishment and an important milestone for our college. We are extremely proud that our CIS program received the full six-year accreditation from ABET. It is one of the world’s most prestigious and rigourous accrediting agencies."
A key requirement of ABET accreditation is that programs continuously improve their quality and demonstrates a commitment to providing its students with a quality education. "ABET accreditation is an assurance of the educational value of computer information systems programs. It is assurance for institutions that their respective CIS programs have met certain quality standards necessary to produce graduates who are ready to enter their professions. Students who graduate from accredited programs have access to enhanced opportunities in employment, licensure, registration and certification, graduate education and global mobility." http://www.abet.org
