University’s AMA Chapter to Host Marketing Seminar on New Ventures

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association has organized a special seminar titled, "Creating and Managing New Ventures" from 12:15-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 in the Classroom Center, Room 335 on campus.

Two guest speakers will talk about how best to start and manage new ventures and competitive businesses. Patrick Burns, president and owner of Palace Coffee Company, and David Terry, co-CEO of Chop Chop Rice Company. Palace Coffee Co. has opened three shops in Amarillo and Canyon with a fourth shop planned for 2017. Palace won American’s Best Coffeehouse competition in 2015, beating out shops from Seattle to Washington, D.C. Chop Chop Rice Company has restaurants in Amarillo, Canyon and Lubbock.

Burns and Terry will present their business and marketing strategies. They will discuss forthcoming changes in the franchising sector and restaurant and coffee business. Both firms and their founders represent first-movers in their competitive businesses and carry unique advantages regarding core competencies and growth potential in the Texas Panhandle and beyond.

According CNBC and other industry reports, the franchise industry and its related sectors will surpass $552 billion, contributing 9.1 million franchise-related jobs. Dr. Syed Tariq Anwar, professor of marketing and international business at WTAMU, corroborates this trend and believes this is a major growth area in the U.S. and international markets.

"It is a win-win situation for this highly diverse industry and rest of the economy; also important are entrepreneurial initiatives, new business models, and leadership opportunities for bright minds," Anwar said. "Our students need to understand that there are ample opportunities in the real world if you have the right strategies, resources, and skills."

This is another timely seminar sponsored by the University’s collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association in the College of Business. The chapter was started in 2014 and has organized informative lectures and seminars. The seminar is free and open to WTAMU students, faculty and staff.
