CANYON, Texas — Energetic students looking to join West Texas A&M University’s growing spirit team can bring it on at upcoming tryouts.
WT Spirit will host WT Game Day Team tryouts from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7 at the First United Bank Center.
Video submissions are sought from those interested in joining the Bucky mascot team. Follow-up interviews will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. June 8 via Zoom.
And tryouts for the WT Maroon Motion Team will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 15 at the Virgil Henson Activities Center.
“We’ve seen great growth in the numbers of students interested in our program, and we’re excited to expand,” said Chance Haugen, assistant vice president for campus community and engagement. “Our main priority is still to promote the University and perform at athletic events, but we are looking for ways to continue to showcase the work of our student team members.”
WT Spirit members must be fulltime students with a 2.0 grade point average. Teams will hold twice-weekly evening practices.
Game Day Team members should be able to perform chants, poms, jumps, signs, tumbling and basic extension building. Maroon Motion Team members should be able to perform turns, leaps and jumps. Bucky team members should excel at crowd engagement. Not all skills are mandatory; potential is sought in all areas, Haugen said.
To audition, register here. Online submissions will be available as needed.
WT Spirit was launched in 2021 under the umbrella of the Office for Student Engagement and Leadership.
Currently, WT Spirit performs at volleyball, football and basketball games and makes special appearances at New Student Orientation, Buff Branding, Start Strong Week and Family Weekend, among other events.

Offering students educational experiences outside the classroom that allows them to showcase their abilities and accomplishments is a key component of the University’s long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign’s new goal is to reach $175 million by 2025; currently, it has raised nearly $160 million.
