CANYON, Texas—The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has approved a six-year accreditation extension to B.B.A. in computer information systems the Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business at West Texas A&M University.

Founded in 1932, ABET is a non-governmental organization that defines standards of quality for university programs in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) areas. With 4,005 accredited programs at more than 790 institutions in 32 countries, ABET assures employers that graduates from accredited schools are ready to enter their field.

"This is a proud moment for us in the Paul and Virginia Engler College of Business. Receiving ABET accreditation for the second time is very exciting because it demonstrates our commitment to provide first-rate computing programs with skills employers need and make our students competitive in this dynamic job market," Dr. Amjad Abdullat, senior associate dean of the Engler College of Business, said.

Achieving accreditation is an 18-month process, in which each university must complete a thorough review of their program, submit a formal self-study report and go through an on-site visit in which peers review their information.

Accreditation is not permanent and schools must go through the ABET re-accreditation process every six years to confirm that the quality of their program still meets ABET standards. WT received initial ABET accreditation in 2011.
