WT AmeriCorps works with community-based organizations working to meet community needs in the Texas Panhandle. We aim to build resiliency within each of our partners; strengthening their infrastructure with WT AmeriCorps members of all ages and experience levels by their side so our partners can better serve their region.

Who we are:

We strive to facilitate and connect community members, not just students, to opportunities for learning, civic engagement, and collaboration; which leads to resilience and vitality across the region. Together, we're building a more resilient network of community organizations, educational institutions, local governments, and other groups working to meet community needs.

Our mission is to augment existing systems, fill gaps, and help build a more supportive and resilient environment through opportunity, engagement, and investment where all people thrive in sustainable careers and communities.

What we do:

We serve under-resourced and rural communities in the Texas Panhandle through partnerships and members across the region. We recruit individuals from various backgrounds and experience levels to become WT AmeriCorps members and serve at partner sites, improving the places they call home. By augmenting existing systems and supporting our partners' needs, we're helping the region grow and become stronger while giving community members a chance to give back and gain valuable skills and experiences.

The Texas Panhandle faces multifaceted challenges that can strain resources and restrict growth and vitality.

WTAMU, the Office of Academic & Regional Collaboration, and WT AmeriCorps are committed to being an active regional partner; working together, across multiple sectors and communities, to increase opportunity, engagement, and investment in the region.

Our focus areas
We partner with organizations to support the Texas Panhandle in four key areas:
  • Educational attainment
    • Through our work we improve attendance and engagement, increase high-school graduation rates and expand college enrollment.
  • Environmental stewardship
    • We help conserve natural habitats, restore and maintain watersheds, and reduce utility bills by improving home energy efficiency.
  • Economic opportunity
    • Our programs serve as a pathway to employment opportunities and help develop vital work skills. We build and rehabilitate affordable housing, provide financial literacy training, and connect people to jobs.
  • Healthy futures
    • We build the capacity of food banks, combat the opioid crisis, tackle homelessness, and address food insecurity.
  • Disaster relief
    • When disaster strikes, we repair homes, assist survivors, and help restore communities. We're part of a nation-wide effort that's deployed thousands of members and volunteers to affected areas.
