Professional Profile
Dr. Kinney joined the Department of English, Philosophy, and Modern Languages in 2026. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in creative writing and in History from Albion College. At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, she completed an MFA in creative writing specializing in poetry and earned her PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Kinney teaches creative writing and first year writing courses. Throughout her career, she has also taught world literature and technical writing and has served as a poetry editor for The Albion Review, MAYDAY, Crab Orchard Review, and Mississippi Review.
Research and Creative Activity
As a poet from rural Michigan, Dr. Kinney is particularly interested in rural/urban dynamics, the representation of working women in rural spaces, and the liminality of place. Her research focuses on ecopoetics, ecofeminism, and working-class poets. Dr. Kinney's creative work has been anthologized in Savor: Poems for the Tongue and in The Book of Jobs: Poems about Work. She is listed as a finalist for Driftwood's 2024 Poetry Prize and as a winner of AWP's 2026 Intro Journals Project. Her poems have been published in Passages North, The Pinch, North Meridian Review, West Trestle Review, THE SHORE, SWWIM, and elsewhere.
