Professional Profile
Dr. Erika Schmitt joined the Department of Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work at West Texas A&M University in the Fall of 2026. She received her B.S. (2013) in Psychology and her M.S. (2017) and Psy.S (2020) in School Psychology from Grand Valley State University. In 2024, Dr. Schmitt earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology and a graduate certificate in Women's and Gender Studies from Texas A&M University following an APA-accredited internship at Boys Town with a Child/Adolescent Outpatient Residential Emphasis. She then completed an APA-accredited postdoctoral fellowship at the Munroe-Meyer Institute in School-Based Applied Behavior Analysis Services and Consultation in 2025. Dr. Schmitt is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
Teaching and Related Service
Dr. Schmitt teaches both undergraduate and graduate psychology courses including General Psychology, Theories of Counseling, and others related to applications and practice. She has taught and provided psychological services in English, Spanish, and Portuguese across international school and clinical contexts. Dr. Schmitt is a member of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and serves as a member of the Behavioral Health Workforce Initiative (BHWI) at WTAMU.
Research and Creative Activity
Dr. Schmitt's research explores the risk and protective factors associated with youth peer victimization. She is particularly interested in the impact of bullying and sexual exploitation on health and academic outcomes. Her current work centers on the experiences of those at the intersections of race, gender, and neurodiversity with the aim of translating findings into applied multicultural settings serving children and families. Dr. Schmitt welcomes undergraduate and graduate students to join her in this work and in parallel projects that students are passionate about pursuing.
