Major Gifts
Major gifts begin at the $25,000 level and may be pledged over a period of time. These gifts are accepted through the WT Foundation for naming purposes, as legacy (or planned) gifts, or to establish endowments. Endowments are essential for sustainability and are a permanent legacy. Interest earnings from endowments provide annual revenue for a particular purpose such as scholarships, professorships, maintenance of facilities and programs. The West Texas A&M University Foundation will work with you and your advisers to help you determine which giving approach and vehicle will best fulfill your goals:
Ways to Commit Major Gifts:
The WTAMU Foundation accepts gifts of securities. We will work with your broker to transfer the security to us and then sell the security for cash. This cash is then used to fulfil the donor’s intent. Gifts are credited at the sale price on the day the security is sold.
The WT Foundation accepts gifts from donor-advised funds (DAF) for the purpose designated by the donor. These gifts are receipted to the DAF custodian since the individual donor received an immediate charitable deduction when the gift was made to the DAF. Individual donors receive recognition credit in WT donor records for gifts made from a DAF. Additionally, the West Texas A&M University Foundation (Federal Tax ID Number: 75-6036665) may qualify as a beneficiary of a donor’s DAF.
A bequest or gift from your will or living trust is one of the most popular legacy giving options due to simplicity. When creating or updating your after-lifetime documents, consider your charitable goals and have your attorney include the gift language in the document during the process.
You can provide a specific dollar amount, asset or percentage of your estate through a bequest and receive a charitable tax deduction on your estate. A benefit to an estate gift is continuing to use your assets during your lifetime and if your situation changes, so does your gift.
See our suggested language to provide your advisors for your bequest gift.
You can transfer funds from your retirement account, life insurance policy or donor-advised fund directly to the West Texas A&M University Foundation tax free after your lifetime. A beneficiary gift is one of the most convenient gifts to make because it only requires a simple update to your beneficiary form to name the West Texas A&M University Foundation (Federal Tax ID Number: 75-6036665).
IRA required minimum distributions are an effective way to have an immediate impact with significant and sustainable funding for WT’s people, programs, and places. You may use this gift to satisfy the required minimum distribution from your IRA while reducing your taxable income, even if you don’t itemize.
Here’s how it works:
- You must be 70½ or older.
- An individual may transfer up to a total of $105,000 per year, and a married couple may give up to $210,000.
- Your gift must be transferred directly from your IRA account to West Texas A&M University Foundation, designated for your chosen purpose.
- Your gift is a transfer of funds from your IRA to the West Texas A&M University Foundation to support WT, so while you do not receive a charitable deduction, it does not create taxable income for you. The transfer of funds can count toward your annual required minimum distribution from your IRA.
- If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) of up to $53,000 from your IRA to fund a gift annuity.
Distributions should be made payable to the West Texas A&M University Foundation and mailed to:
West Texas A&M University Foundation
Box 60766
Canyon, Texas 79016-0001
With recent changes to legislation under the SECURE 2.0 Act, the age in which IRA holders must take their required minimum distribution (RMD) has been increased to 73. However, anyone age 70½ or older can still make Qualified Charitable Distributions to their favorite charities.

Life income gifts are an investment that pay you or your loved ones cash for your financial commitment. There are many different reasons to invest in a life-income gift, and payout rates depend on factors like your investment amount, age and the terms of the gift. While life-income gifts are more involved than bequests and beneficiary gifts, if one first your plan, the reward can be worth the extra work. For information on life income gifts, contact the WT Foundation.
