English 1302 - Academic Writing and Research

Course Overview

WTAMU 2014-15 Undergraduate Catalog Course Description: English 1302: Research and Rhetoric—Prerequisite: ENGL 1301. Course builds on topics introduced in WTAMU’s ENGL 1301—fundamentals of rhetoric, rhetorical grammar, plagiarism and academic integrity—and explores claim types, the research process and documentation.

English 1302 engages students in inquiry-driven research and research-based writing. Students practice a variety of research methods as they pursue ideas and information from a variety of source-types: websites, online journals, print texts, interviews, statistical data, etc.  Students analyze and synthesize their findings in order to develop a carefully supported, thesis-driven argument appropriate for the academic context.

English 1302 and Texas Core Curriculum

As part of the Texas Core Curriculum, English 1302 meets the definition specified for the Foundational Component Area of Communication.  Through the Texas Core Curriculum, "students will gain a foundation of knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world, develop principles of personal and social responsibility for living in a diverse world, and advance intellectual and practical skills that are essential for all learning."

Communication Area Content Description:       

  1. Courses in this category focus on developing ideas and expressing them clearly, considering the effect of the message, fostering understanding, and building the skills needed to communicate persuasively.
  2. Courses involve the command of oral, aural, written, and visual literacy skills that enable people to exchange messages appropriate to the subject, occasion, and audience.
  3. The following four Core Objectives must be addressed in each course approved to fulfill this category requirement:

Critical Thinking Skills: creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information

Communication Skills: effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication

Teamwork:  the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared          purpose or goal

Personal Responsibility: the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making

English 1302 Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of English 1302, a student will be able to

  1. evaluate the effectiveness of an argument for a target audience;
  2. generate effective research questions that facilitate sustained inquiry and research;
  3. demonstrate effective use of library and or other resources to aid in research;
  4. locate appropriate source materials;
  5. synthesize information from primary and secondary sources within a research-based academic argument;
  6. develop a research-based academic argument that is appropriate for the rhetorical situation;
  7. successfully fulfill formatting and citation expectations for a given citation style;
  8. demonstrate proficiency in academic conventions of mechanics, punctuation, and grammar.
