Virtual Interviews

Let’s talk virtual interviews. Virtual Interviews, no longer the unfamiliar, unrealistic, unreliable route to a job! The former futuristic format is now a piece of the past, and although it may seem way more convenient, there are some pitfalls and special considerations to make when preparing for a virtual interview.

Check your tech (technology that is) – You want to be sure that you can cut out as many technical difficulties as possible. Make sure your device is fully charged and have anything you might need tech wise ready and set up in advance. Keeping technology in mind, you also want to set your laptop or computer on a surface that makes your camera more level with your face, preventing the person(s) interviewing you from seeing a weird angle or view of you!

Clear the space – Make your background minimal and clean. You don’t want the weird poster behind you to be the thing that the interviewer is focused on, you want it to be your amazing and well-crafted answers.

Dress professionally – Even though it may feel like it’s not a “real” interview, it is still just as real.  They are evaluating everything from the way you answer to what you’re wearing, make sure you dress accordingly. On top of that, dressing professionally can put you in the right mindset for an interview.

Eliminate distractions – Turn off your phone, put your pets outside or in a room you won’t hear them, and get a babysitter, if possible!

If anything does go wrong in a virtual interview, such as technical difficulties or interruptions outside of your control, just apologize and keep moving forward. If you repeatedly apologize and get stuck on it, that is what they will remember about you. That advice goes for any interview!
