WTAMU Students Compete at SASES Conference
CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s Chalone Hefley earned the second-place prize in visual presentation, and teammate Elizabeth Newell was elected the 2013 national membership coordinator at the national Students of Agronomy, Soils and Environmental Sciences (SASES) Conference Oct. 19-23 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Hefley, a sophomore plant, soil and environmental science major from Tulia, received a $150 cash award as well as $125 for the Farm and Ranch Club for her second-place finish. Newell, a sophomore plant, soil and environmental science major from Vernon, will fill one of five national officer positions after being elected as membership coordinator.
Seven WTAMU students traveled to Cincinnati for the SASES conference to compete in club poster, visual presentation and quiz bowl competitions. Other WTAMU plant, soil and environmental science majors joining Hefley and Newell at the event were Alyssa Evalle, senior from Canyon; Hayden Alexander, senior from Plainview; Ryan Heinrich, junior from Slaton; Casey McAnally, senior from White Deer; and Chip Morris, junior from Vega.
Dr. Brock Blaser, assistant professor of plant science, serves as the faculty adviser.
