WTAMU Student Selected for ONA 12 Student Newsroom
CANYON, Texas—Krystina Martinez, a senior mass communication/broadcasting major at West Texas A&M University, is one of 20 students chosen from across the country to the ONA 12 Student Newsroom to help provide coverage of the Online News Association Conference and Awards Banquet Sept. 20-22 in San Francisco.
Online News Association is the world’s largest organization of digital journalists with a membership that includes news writers, producers, designers, editors, bloggers, photographers, educators and developers as well as students. More than 400 students applied for ONA 12 Student Newsroom positions, and the 20 selected represent colleges and universities from as far away as Canada and Finland.
“This year saw double the number of applicants, and once again, the high overall quality made the selection process particularly challenging,” Jane McDonnell, ONA executive director, said. “It’s a good sign for the profession to see such an impressive combination of professional experience and academic credentials.”
Google is providing $20,000 in scholarship funds to cover registration, travel and lodging expenses for each of the 20 students chosen to the ONA 12 Student Newsroom. Martinez and the student team will cover the conference for the ONA website, providing stories, video and photos.
Martinez is the editor of the University’s student newspaper The Prairie for the fall 2012 semester and plans to graduate in December. She served as the paper’s assistant editor during the 2011-2012 academic year.
