WTAMU Student Named Finalist for National Award

CANYON, Texas—Reba Underwood, a senior agricultural media and communications major at West Texas A&M University, will travel to Buffalo, N.Y.,  Aug. 3-7 as a finalist for the coveted Forrest Bassford Student Award, where the winner of the national award will be announced Aug. 5 at the 15th annual Agricultural Media Summit.

The Forrest Bassford Student Award was established by the Livestock Publications Council to recognize aReba Underwoodnd reward excellence and leadership and to encourage professionalism among students in agricultural communications. The winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship.

Underwood, a native of Idalou, currently works in WTAMU’s Office of Communications and Marketing. She also owns a freelance photography and graphic design business, Weatherbeaten Soule Designs. Her career goals are to educate students at the junior college or university level. She also hopes to help innovate digital and social media into agricultural communications and to inform urban people on the importance of agriculture and how it influences their everyday life.

At WTAMU, Underwood serves as past president and student adviser of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow chapter and founder of WTagchat, a lunch group that meets once a week. She also is a member of Collegiate FFA, serves as a tour guide through Campus Services, is an incoming Transfer Student Mentor, a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success and assists with layout and design for The Prairie student newspaper. Underwood also is a member of Livestock Publications Council, American Agricultural Editors Association and the Agricultural Relations Council.

The Livestock Publications Council is an international organization, founded in 1974, that serves the livestock communications industry. The non-profit organization provides a forum through which members can obtain information about how to improve their overall effectiveness and value to both readers and advertisers.
