WTAMU’s Home Named to Safest College Towns List


CANYON, Texas—Parents of West Texas A&M University students can rest assured their children are safe with the city of Canyon ranked at No. 12 by Safewise in the 2017 Safest College Towns in America listing. CanySafest College Towns badgeon is the only Texas city on the list, and the closest safe college town is Edmond, Okla., home of the University of Central Oklahoma, at No. 30.

Safewise ranked its college towns using the FBI’s most recent crime statistics from 2015 and calculated the total number of crimes committed in each American city with at least one accredited, academic institution of higher education. Those numbers were then weighed to population numbers and other factors. According to the information provided about No. 12 ranked Canyon, the city reported fewer than 190 total crimes in 2015, including just 24 violent offenses. Safewise also looked at relevant safety, security and community outreach programs that help make college towns safer. Crime prevention measures cited for Canyon included the Citizen Police Academy and Canyon Crime Stoppers.

Families often consider reputation and affordability when selecting a college, but according to Safewise, 70 percent of parents feel that campus safety is critical to school choice. The city a college calls home also is an important part in the selection process. The 30 towns and cities named to the 2017 Safest College Towns in America represent the best in educational opportunities as well as impressive safety records on and off campus.
