WTAMU Livestock Team Named to Top 10 Teams at Contest

CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s livestock judging team finished as a top 10 team after competing at the 2012 American Royal Livestock Judging Contest Saturday, Nov. 3 in Kansas City, Mo.

The WTAMU team earned a total of 4,555 points to be named one of the overall top 10 teams. Team members are Jeff Long, Blaine Red, Alicia Ashcraft, Taylor Eurich and Karl Miller. Other teams making the coveted list include Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University, Colorado State University, Kansas State University, Michigan State University, University of Illinois, Western Illinois University and Iowa State University. Forty-six teams for 26 states competed at the event.

The American Royal Livestock Judging Contest is open to one term per senior college and consists of five members per team. All scores contribute toward the overall team score. Contestants judge 12 classes of livestock, containing four animals each. Classes include both breeding and market animals in beef, sheep/goat and swine divisions.

In individual classes, the WTAMU team earned 1,169 points as one of the top five teams in the sheep/goat competition while two team members were named top five individuals in separate divisions. Eurich was named a top five individual in swine with 291 points, and Red earned 431 points as a top five individual in beef.

The team will travel Tuesday for a contest in Louisville, Ky. It will mark the team’s final competition of the fall semester. Marcus Arnold, a Ph.D. student at WTAMU, is the team coach.
