WTAMU Ensemble Competing at National Trumpet Competition

CANYON, Texas—Six students from West Texas A&M University will travel to Washington D.C., to compete as an ensemble at the National Trumpet Competition March 13-17 at George Mason University.

The ensemble is one of 30 groups from across the country competing in the semifinal round of the annual event. The group, comprised of Preston Beaty, a junior music education major from Flower Mound, Zane Brown, a senior music performance major from Memphis, Alex Collins, a junior music education major from Amarillo, Payne Conner, a junior music education major from Midland, Brad Kinder, a senior music education major from Midland, and Steve Siegel, a graduate student in performance from Amarillo, submitted a video recording of a performance to compete at the contest. They will represent WTAMU along with other student ensembles from such schools as Florida State University, Eastman, Baylor, the University of Tennessee and more.

The ensemble will perform Thursday evening, March 14 for the right to advance to the final round. Finalists will be announced that evening with final auditions scheduled for Saturday afternoon, March 16. Winners will be announced at an awards assembly at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

The National Trumpet Competition is conducted each spring at George Mason University and is one of the most prestigious events for trumpet students. The event covers four days of competition along with concerts and master classes by special guest artists and talented, well known trumpet players.
