WTAMU Course Offers Students Event Planning Experience

CANYON, Texas—The Department of Communication at West Texas A&M University offers a course that provides both learning and work experience for students.

COMM 4302 is an event planning course taught by Vanessa Dirksmeyer, instructor of communication. She creates learning experience for students as they work with clients and master the concepts of teamwork, time Event Planning Classmanagement and organizational skills.

“Students have been briefed by their clients and then volunteer to work on different projects within the event,” Dirksmeyer said.

The students enrolled in the course assisted with the September Communication Hall of Fame banquet. They were able to select the menu for the event, serve as hosts and participate in an etiquette course. Students also planned the table décor and floral arrangements.

Upcoming events will include planning the 100th birthday for The Prairie, the University’s student newspaper, a National Student Advertising Competition fundraiser and a wedding.

While working for clients and executing events, students have been able to experience the role of an event planner, from booking venues to planning marketing campaigns, to designing specific items for the event.

The event planning course has been offered at WTAMU as an upper division elective for students since 2013. Over the course of the semester, guest speakers and field trips provide opportunities for networking and learning more about what is involved with planning a public or private event.
