WTAMU Athletics Receives $1 Million Gift for Scholarships
CANYON, Texas—Whether it’s men’s or women’s sports, home games or out-of-town, student-athletes at West Texas A&M University can count on Bob and Mary Stewart being in the crowd to cheer them on to victory. But the Stewarts, longtime fans of any and all sports at WTAMU, are extending their support far beyond attendance at games with a $1 million gift to establish The Bob and Mary Stewart Athletics Scholarship Endowment.
The gift will benefit all varsity athletic teams at WTAMU and will serve as the primary memorial and endowment giving vehicle for fellow fans to make gifts to honor friends and loved ones. The gift’s expendable earnings will be distributed annually to each varsity team’s scholarship account, and head coaches will award the funds in accordance with NCAA guidelines.
“Those, like the Stewarts, who have the foresight to establish endowments providing perpetual support profoundly impact the future of this university and its students,” Dr. Walter Wendler, University president, said.
The Stewart's support all sports at WTAMU and don’t favor one sport, one coach or one athlete, and their gift will reflect that. All student-athlete scholarships awarded will include a portion of funds from The Bob and Mary Stewart Athletics Scholarship Endowment.
“We are deeply moved by the generosity of Bob and Mary and appreciate so much their desire to leave an enormous legacy that will benefit Buffs and Lady Buffs forever,” Michael McBroom, director of athletics, said. “They are shining examples of the WT spirit in every sense.”
Bob, a WTAMU alumnus, and Mary truly reflect the University spirit, and many consider the two to be members of the athletic family. They have embraced the student-athletes and coaches and celebrate weddings, births and other important life moments with each of them. They host dinners at the end of the seasons for many of the teams to celebrate and recognize players and coaches. The tradition began in 2000 with volleyball and now has grown to include dinner for both the women’s and men’s basketball teams.
The Stewarts appreciate each team’s success as well as the academic performance of WTAMU’s student-athletes. They also understand the importance of endowed gifts and are happy to help student-athletes in their education who might otherwise not have the financial means. Their generous gift will go a long way in helping student-athletes be successful on the playing field and in the classroom. Beginning in 2017, more than 400 student-athletes at WTAMU will receive annual aid from the Stewart Endowment.
“We have long believed that just as Jesus Christ is the foundation of our lives, WT was the earthly foundation for our livelihood and for the success we have enjoyed,” Bob and Mary Stewart said. “We have truly been blessed and are grateful to be able to use this opportunity via an athletic endowment to benefit young people in their education for generations to come.”
The Stewarts are longtime members of the Buffalo Club and the Old Main Society.
