WTAMU and AISD Collaborate on Summer Institute

CANYON, Texas—Math teachers from across the Panhandle are learning instructional strategies to help improve student academic scores during a two-week Summer Institute at West Texas A&M University.

The Institute is the first part of a two-pronged effort between WTAMU and Amarillo Independent School District called Preparing Algebra Teachers for Student Success (PATSS). AISD and other Panhandle teacher participants are exploring algebra content and teaching strategies linked to the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Algebra End of Course (EOC) exam and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The Summer Institute kicked off July 9 at WTAMU and continues through July 19. Participants will attend a second PATSS session during the 2012-2013 academic year to complete the professional development project.

During the Summer Institute, the algebra teachers are working with three members of the WTAMU faculty on teaching to develop critical thinking skills, problem-based learning, utilizing multiple representations and engaging in the use of technology. WTAMU faculty members participating in the Summer Institute include Dr. Kristina Gill, Dr. Pamela Lockwood and Dr. Robin Capt.

For more information about the Summer Institute, call Gill at 806-651-2538.
