WTAMU and AC to Team Up for Day of Caring
CANYON, Texas—Longtime education partners West Texas A&M University and Amarillo College are gearing up to serve as the lead sponsors for this year’s Day of Caring.
In addition to serving as lead sponsors, the two organizations will team up to provide the Amarillo Activity Youth Center a fresh coat of paint.
Members of the WTAMU and AC workforces will roll up their sleeves from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, April 21 to paint the Youth Center at 816 S. Van Buren St. in downtown Amarillo.
The project is one of many scheduled as part of the Day of Caring, a community-wide effort spearheaded annually by the United Way of Amarillo and Canyon.
“This is a lively, productive and refreshing way for our institutions to join hands for the benefit of the community we serve,” Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, AC president, said.
“AC and WT are allies for student success and community enrichment,” he said. “Pitching in to help maintain an important neighborhood resource, especially one that serves our youth, is a natural extension of our responsibility to serve. As an added bonus, I think it will be fun.”
Lead sponsors WTAMU and AC will be joined on the Day of Caring by hundreds of fellow volunteers who will be similarly lending a hand at other non-profit agencies throughout the community.
“The Day of Caring is a great way to reach out to others in our community, to do something constructive and good for the city,” Dr. Walter Wendler, WTAMU president, said. “We are happy to join AC in this venture. By working together we can make a real difference.
“We are longtime education partners,” he said. “This gives us an opportunity to unite and take responsibility for some of the challenges outside our classrooms. We are ready to paint, interact with the community and do the best we can as volunteers on this Day of Caring.”
