Vietnamese Student Association to Host 2012 Full Moon Festival
CANYON, Texas—West Texas A&M University’s Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) invites the University community to an evening of exciting performances and activities at its Full Moon Festival from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7 at the Wesley Foundation, 107 26th St. in Canyon.
The event is designed to share information about the Vietnamese people and their culture. WTAMU is home to several Vietnamese students, and this year’s event will include more activities while showcasing their country’s music, dance, costumes and food.
The organization hosted its first Full Moon Festival last year with more than 200 participants. Deborah Woolsey, an ESL instructor at the University’s ESLI center, posted on her Facebook page about last year’s event, “It was a fantastic evening of culture, songs and activities. It was a marvelous party—such a sense of community—sometimes lacking in the larger American community.”
In Vietnam, the Moon Festival is the day children dress in new clothes and go around the streets carrying lanterns lighted with candles. Farmers also fly lanterns to wish for good crops while families gather for celebrations and fun.
This year’s Full Moon Festival is sponsored by VSA, WTAMU, the Wesley Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, United and many other individuals and organizations.
