Food Security Topic of WTAMU Presentation

CANYON, Texas—The Department of Agricultural Sciences at West Texas A&M University will host Elanco president Jeff Simmons on Thursday, Jan. 23 for a discussion on issues of feeding a growing global population.

“Enough: The fight for a food secure tomorrow” will begin at 2:15 p.m. in Legacy Hall of the Jack B. Kelly Student Center on the WTAMU campus. Simmons will be discussing food security issues on a global scale and what producers can do to show their support for innovation and modern agriculture practices.

“Food security is solvable,” Simmons said. “Unlike many of our world’s challenges, there are clear solutions. There is a window of opportunity to meet the challenge. We have enough time—just enough—if we act now.”

University faculty, staff, students as well as community members are invited to attend. Children also are welcome to attend. If coming from an off-campus location, parking is available in the University residential parking area by Victory Drive.

Since 2008, Simmons has served as president of Elanco, the animal health division of Eli Lilly and Company. As part of this role, he is also a senior vice president and executive officer of Lilly. In more than two decades with the company, Simmons has held a number of sales, marketing and management positions, in the United States and abroad, including serving as country director in Brazil and area director for West Europe based in the U.K.

These international experiences offered Simmons a new perspective on food and agriculture and created a deep conviction about the need for solutions to global food security.

He has published white papers on this topic and actively engages in food security discussions on social media at @jeffsimmons2050.

“The challenge is great but not insurmountable,” he said. “We have the tools to change this. The choices we make between now and 2020 will determine whether we’ll make it there.”

Elanco is an innovation-driven company with offices in more than 75 countries and 2012 sales of over $2 billion. The company is committed to protein production, companion animal health and food safety, with an emphasis on helping the food industry produce a safe and affordable food supply.
