Duo Piano Recital to Open WTAMU’s Annual Grace Hamilton Piano Festival


CANYON, Texas—The School of Music at West Texas A&M University will kick off its annual Grace Hamilton Piano Festival with guest artist Dr. Chien-Jung Chen in a special piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 at Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on campus.

Chen, director of the Department of Preparatory and Continuing Studies at the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, will collaborate with Choong-ha Nam, WTAMU associate professor of music. They will present a duo piano recital of works by Mozart, Shostakovich, Guastavino and Kapustin/Dizzie Gillespie.

Chen, a native of Taiwan and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, has performed as a solo artist with numerous orchestras including the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of South Africa, the Gauteng Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Clear Lake Symphony Orchestra and in venues from Johannesburg to Houston as a collaborative artist. Her recordings for the South African Broadcasting Corporation have aired on the national radio program Musici van Môre.

Chen also is the coordinator for the Houston Forum Young Artists Competition hosted by Forum Music Teachers Association, and she has previously served as the association’s vice president and president. She is active as a judge and clinician and is routinely invited to festivals and contests by music teachers associations throughout the state of Texas.

She received her Bachelor of Music degree at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and completed both a Master of Music degree and a Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Most recently she was a student of Nancy Weems at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where she completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree.

The Grace Hamilton Piano Festival continues on Saturday, Feb. 10 and concludes with a student honors recital at 2 p.m. in the Sybil B. Harrington Fine Arts Complex, Recital Hall.
