Board of Regents Approves Purchase for Additional Parking at WTAMU

CANYON, Texas—The West Texas A&M University campus will have additional space for parking after The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, during its regular meeting Thursday, Jan. 31 at Texas A&M University, approved the purchase price of a 97-unit apartment complex located just east of the Virgil Henson Activities Center (VHAC).

The purchase, pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and legal review by the Office of General Counsel, will give WTAMU 3.3 acres of land after the demolition of the Silver Creek Apartment complex. The land, just east of the VHAC and northeast of Founders Hall, will provide parking and support for the new residence hall. The $1,450,000 purchase price will come from the Revenue Financing System debt proceeds remaining from the construction of Founders Hall.

In other business, Room 201 in the Agriculture and Natural Sciences Building has been named The Great Plains Ag Credit Endowed Classroom after approval by the board. Great Plains Ag Credit, a lending cooperative, pledged $35,000 to name the standard classroom. The pledge is part of the University’s Share Your Pride comprehensive campaign.

The board also approved a resolution expressing appreciation to WTAMU’s horse judging team. The WTAMU horse team has enjoyed an exceptional year with a successful record at three preeminent competitions. The University team opened its 2012 season as the champion team at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in October, followed by a Reserve Champion win at the November AQHA World Championship and closed out the competitive season with another championship win at NRHA. Overall, the WTAMU team has won 70 champion or reserve champion team or individual national or world championships since 1994.
