English 2311 - Introduction to Professional and Technical Communication
 

Course Overview

English 2311 provides an introduction to the theory and practices of business professional and technical communication.  The course’s assignments and classroom instruction develop the ability of students to produce documents that will be effective in and appropriate for the workplace. 

WTAMU’s common curriculum for English 2311 assumes that students have successfully completed the course of study offered by WTAMU’s common curriculum for English 1301.  As such, students are expected to have gained familiarity with:

  • Fundamentals of rhetoric and argumentation
  • Rhetorical grammar

English 2311 is a component of the Texas Core Curriculum, within the Foundational Component Area of Communication. Through the Texas Core Curriculum, “students will gain a foundation of knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world, develop principles of personal and social responsibility for living in a diverse world, and advance intellectual and practical skills that are essential for all learning."

Required Texas Core Objectives

Critical Thinking Skills: creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information

Communication Skills: effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication

Teamwork: the ability to consider different points of view and to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal

Personal Responsibility: the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of English 2311, a student should be able to:

  1. Identify and tailor arguments to a variety of business and technically focused target audiences
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential concepts of rhetoric and argumentation, including exigence and the rhetorical appeals
  3. Prepare effective documents related to the job-search process (e.g. résumé and cover letter)
  4. Demonstrate familiarity with the professional expectations associated with common business correspondence including memos, letters and email
  5. Analyze the design effectiveness of reports, proposals and other business correspondence
  6. Demonstrate familiarity with basic documentation systems such as MLA, APA, CMS, etc.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential categories and components of proposals and reports
  8. Prepare an effective researched-based, formal proposal and/or report
  9. Define rhetorical grammar and prescriptive grammar and demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which the two concepts differ
